Despite the health benefits of figs, downsides also exist

Despite the many health benefits of figs, there are a few things of which to be aware. Mind you, these are not things that are detrimental to your health, just information you should know before going to the store and buying ten pounds of figs so you can start your all-fig diet. This is a very safe and tasty food, but consuming a lot of them can produce a laxative effect. This property is especially pronounced when you eat a lot of dried figs, which is how most people outside of fig producing areas will consume them. So the first thing to keep in mind is that moderation is key when it comes to figs. They contain a chemical called oxalates, which is known to cause gall bladder and kidney stones when it builds up a high concentration in the body. People who already have a history of developing stones should be aware that their risk of developing more will likely increase if they consume a lot of figs. In moderation, however, they should not cause any problems.
